authentication. However, just what is biometric technology?
Biometrics is a technology used for the identification and verification of users. The technology analyzes and compares personal identities, using both physical and behavioral characteristics, making its use safer, easier, quicker, and more convenient than conventional security measures like passwords.
Apart from recognizing fingerprints and human faces, there is much more about biometric-related technology, which can be divided largely into two groups:
1. Physical identity involving fingerprints, palm veins, palms, retinas, irises, faces, DNA, body scents, etc.
2. Behavioral identity involving voices, signatures, and keyboard typing
The use of some biometrics, e.g. body scent or palm vein scanning, can be costly and is not yet stable, making its use rare.
Data privacy is a top priority for most people nowadays because everyone wants to reduce the risk of identity theft. Biometric technology has therefore been developed for increased accuracy and is widely used in both the public and private sectors, e.g. fingerprint scanning used for criminal record checks, voice recognition by chatbots, digital signatures for business transactions, or facial recognition for account opening.
SCB has also adopted biometric technology to accommodate customers opening accounts online (no passbook). Anyone wanting to try opening an account using biometric technology can visit a 7-Eleven store near them and ask to open an SCB account with a store employee. Identity verification is easy through just a few steps, as follows:
1. Insert your ID card into a card reader machine.
2. Have your photo taken (using facial scanning / facial recognition technology)
3. Enter your telephone number and set up a temporary password.
4. Accept the terms of service
5. When completed, customers will receive a slip and an SMS alert. Their new account can then be opened instantly on the SCB Easy Application.
Biometric technology has proven a success and has the potential to be adopted and developed even further. Development will ensure that the system will be more effectively managed in terms of security. Like other technologies, biometrics has some downsides, and we users must be very careful not to let their biometric data leak as it cannot be reset like a traditional password.
