How to tell whether you’re about to burn out or lose passion

Perhaps you've been in a scenario where you've had enough of your job and you're just plain worn out from all the effort you've put in so far. What could be causing this? Is it a sign of burnout, or simply a loss of passion for

your work? Let’s investigate the similarities and differences between these two concepts.

School and work-related burnout and disinterest are frequent experiences for young adults. Despite their obvious resemblance, there are significant differences between these two groups of symptoms.

  • Workplace burnout is akin to a power failure. It's a result of long-term pressure from a job, mental and physical exhaustion, and stress. As a result, you lose interest in your job and find the thought of working unpleasant.
  • Symptoms of a lack of passion for one's profession include being bored with it or feeling like there are no longer any significant challenges to be met in the course of doing it. Many people wish to achieve more, but the loss of passion is typically a symptom that occurs with repetitive activities or work.

So, to illustrate the difference in simple terms, burnout is a sensation of stress and more extreme mental tiredness. Loss of passion on the other hand, is simply boredom in one's work and need not always result in burnout.

Now that we've established what burnout is like, we can look at ways to alleviate it.

First, you need to speak with someone and realize what your feelings are and embrace them. These symptoms are common, so you shouldn't put undue stress on yourself to figure out why you're experiencing them.

Most would agree that a lack of passion isn't as bad as burnout. A small reward for a job well done can help, as can switching gears and doing something else you enjoy before returning to the task for which you lack enthusiasm.

There is a wide range of burnout severity from person to person. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't learn to cope. Make sure you schedule time for both work and relaxation. Don't overwork yourself. Instead, pursue some enjoyable hobbies and interests and spend less time online in favor of face-to-face interactions with loved ones.

Finally, you must learn to accept yourself as you are and stop trying to change anything about how you're feeling. Make the mental shift that these issues are treatable and preventable and you'll have the insight to effectively deal with them.
